should mention that on wednesday morning out at ocean beach, the marine corps and the navy are setting up what's called the shock trauma platoon, a field hospital you and i might think of as a mass unit. and coming into ocean beach in cooperation with the national park service is what we call an lcac, acronym, landing craft air. it will be a demonstration of how medical supplies will be brought in by amphibious supplies during a disaster. out of lake merced, we'll be landing helicopters to demonstrate medical evacuation procedures to the civilian community. having said all that, we have a cast and characters here to speak today and we'll be available for questions afterwards. we have major general mike meyer, retired marine corps. he is the chairman of the board for the san francisco fleet week association. we have joanne hayes white fire chief, monique moyer from the port, ann crone enberg department of emergency management. and i have to emphasize the partnership fleet week has with the department of emergency management goes beyond your imagination and the work we do together to cre

navy and the marines, and that is a very successful program. we started in 2010. in 2011 what we realized is that every marin is a rifle man and every sailor is a firefighter. and, so, conversely, the navy last year, they're going to do it again this year, invites the fire department on board the ship to learn shipboard firefighting techniques. and with that i'm going to introduce chief joanne hayes white. american navy ships, united states navy ships, we have canadian ships coming in, coast guard ships. they all have to be put somewhere. and working out those complexities are the folks at the san francisco port. i'd like to call up monique moya. . three chinese naval vessels sailed through the area. the u.s. navy has deployed two nuclear power aircraft carriers in the western pacific. they are navigating within reach. t several warships including vessels equipped with the air defense system are running alongside them. a navy sports person says the fleet provides a compact force of the united states and its allies and partners. there's fresh tension between japan and south korea. th south lnche aprotest with japan claiming that a helicopter belonging to the self-defense force entered the air defense identification zone in the sea of japan. the issue centers around the takeshima islands. they are claimed by japan but controlled by south korea. the south korean defense ministry says a helicopter took off located 54 kilometers east of the islands on september 21st. the ministry said the helicopter entered the zone for five minutes. it said the craft left after it was warned by air force fighter jets. the ministry noted prior approval is required before entering the zone. it set us defensive measure against unidentified aircraft

more than a million extra people this week for large scale events, including fleet week. navy and marines are on ocean beep right now. amy hollyfield is there live to explain -- beach right now. amy hollyfield is there live to explain why. >> reporter: they were dazzling everyone they showed off one of their cool tools and a few others to get fleet week kicked off. some call this is an engineering marvel. the size of it and how much it can carry oversea and land on a cushion of air. it impressed san francisco's mayor as it came ashore this morning. >> i'm very surprised at the size of it, the ability to carry emergency equipment from trucks to generators and all the things we might absolutely need. >> reporter: layman's term is hovercraft. navy officials will tell you it is technically called a landing craft air cushion. they brought it here as part of fleet week to showcase the fact that the navy can move combat or humanitarian supplies from a ship to the beach, very quickly. >> it travels at 40, 50 miles an hour on the water. most vessels out here travel 5 to 10 miles. >> report

a big game against navy. it follows a dramatic fourth quarter win in san diego for the first time since 1952. last saturday -- spartan quarterback david fales threw three touchdown passes in final 12 minutes of the game to complete a 38 to 34 win. tight end ryan otten caught his first touchdown pass of the season.
